This collections contains Dr. Govan's various administrative library documents, correspondence, historical writings, reviews, extensive research notes, and published materials. The library documents contain budget, circulation, and inventory data related to the University of Chattanooga's library during Dr. Govan's tenure as its director (1934-1962). Extensive notecards and other materials demonstrate Dr. Govan's meticulous research methods. Of interest is correspondence from around the United States congratulating Dr. Govan on several of his publications and activities, including letters from Mississippi Governor James P. Coleman and United States Senator Estes Kefauver.

Dr. Gilbert Govan was director of the library at the University of Chattanooga (1934-1962). He was also a prominent local historian who published a couple of books about Chattanooga and area histories.
